Point blank this is the best skating photograph I have seen.Perhaps it is the combination of the fisheye lens and the body shape that focusses the eye on the explosive kick turn. The clawed hand suggests the edgy tension that surrounded the Dogtowner’s (or at least the Dogtowner’s image:Ed). The grainy black and white scheme portrays another reality beyond the Californian ideal. The back wheel skimming the swimming pool coping is disorientating and exciting.

In 1978 when I first saw this photo it was the ripped shorts that created an impression of cool.
